Legacy of a Bold Creation

Brother Demarest opened his Lodge education program with a dare: leave a legacy!

On that day, Monday June 10, Brother Demarest revealed to us how he was inspired by a fated encounter with the wisdom of Brother Winston Churchill. The course of his curiosity then led to Brother Harry Truman, who’s relations with Churchill were well known in those days.

Pondering on some of the wisdom the two great Brothers left behind, he wondered what can each of you, Brethren, leave behind to future Brethren, as part of your great legacy that is the Ancient and Accepted Order of Freemasons.

He shared some of the most moving quotes from those revered, historical brethren and his reflections upon them…

Quotes from Brother Harry Truman:

“All my life, whenever it comes time to make a decision, I make it and forget about it.”

As a Mason, and a leader among men and Brethren, you must make your decision and accept all consequence, from glorious to catastrophic, and continue to move forward towards accomplishing the greater vision.

“I never gave anybody hell! I just told the truth and they thought it was hell.”

Well, that just got a loud round of laughter from every Brother in Lodge, because each has been on both the receiving and delivering end of the hard truth… and we all know that how truth is received is a matter of our own perception. At times the truth must be heard, at times it must be spoken… in all those times, always remember your greatness!

Quotes from Brother Winston Churchill:

“You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.”

Simply put: stay focused. We live in a world riddle with distractions. Keep your attention on the goal and on the vision, don’t allow anything to distract from that.

“Fear is a reaction, courage is a decision.”

Again, be intentional in your endeavors. Do not relent and allow fear of failure or failure itself to detract you from your vision.

“A nation that forgot its past has no future.”

Lastly, Brother Demarest reminds us to not forget our Lodge’s past, nor Freemasonry’s, for to do so would be, as the quote says, detrimental.

We are encouraged to look well to the future, keep faith in our Brethren and in ourselves, trust the wisdom of the past, stay the course and remain focused as we courageously charge towards creating the future of the Brotherhood of Man.
